T.A.Z. [Temporary Autonomous Zone] Anti-Copyright 1992

Explorations of the political, the personal, the social, and the metaphysical from writer and spoken word artist Hakim Bey. A meld with musical terrorist Bill Laswell.

Bey advocates nearly everything, including creating free states for like-minded cabals and collectives. He recommends marginalized groups form secret societies and concludes with a lengthy piece on boycotting cop culture. Musique concrete cloaks his words in an eerily seductive melange of avant-garde noise and ambient music. But the sounds are almost immaterial. Bey's words are the primary focus of this disc.

A swirling, surreal vertigo of information and methods for "escape", woven with the kind of airy tones and hallucinatory rhythms that Laswell has been playing with lately, Bey's voice calms and prepares the listener for an age where missing information and the icons of late capitalist high-tech correspond with an increasing alienation of this "X-generation"'s most primitive needs. Most of all, Bey doesn't come across as a cheesy, overzealous, visionary bard, but presents us with ideas point-blank, allowing us to be choosy in aiming our own forms of poetic terrorism against those forces that attempt to suppress and homogenize humility and free thought.

Radios Discordia Short Story audio: The Rebranding of Billy Bailey by Cory Doctorow

The Rebranding of Billy Bailey, a short story about Brand Management Ad Absurdum.

What if that kid at school, who is always the trend setter, were actually a brand funded by the products he is seen using and wearing?

This story is purely satirical, and it maintains its clever and inventive pace throughout. Billy Bailey is a sixth-grade kid, and a heel, a professional heel; that is to say he maintains an image as a class prankster and brat. And he has an agent to handle his endorsements and help maintain his image. But when a hostile principal and a slimy but rich fellow student frame him for a clumsy prank unworthy of his style, he decides it's time to change. It's time for rebranding.

Radio Discordia 015: This Living Hand - The TV Sounds Worried

Mississippi's contribution to '90s slowcore, This Living Hand played haunting, downbeat songs that evoke a 3 a.m. of the soul. Founded by childhood friends Neilson Hubbard and Clay Jones (later joined by violinist Helen Lamb). After adding drummer Garrison Starr, the band recorded 'Consolation Prize' at Memphis' legendary Easley Studios.

After a short tour with Jack Logan, the band cut The TV Sounds Worried. While retaining the narcoleptic drift of Consolation Prize, the songs are more focused and structured (check out "Copilot" or the sublime "Astronaut"). Jones' sensurround production and Hubbard's Dean Wareham-on-ludes warble are both showcased to dazzling effect. A lost classic, The TV Sounds Worried went unissued even after promotional copies were circulated in advance of its scheduled release.

Tryad: Four members; Vavrek and Arna in Seattle, John Holowach in Ohio, and RJ Marshall in Japan — combined musical talents through the open copyright licensing options at Creative Commons.

Creative Commons, a non-profit organization, allows owners of intellectual property to license, for free, their work so that others may build upon it. Tryad plans on continuing the generosity they have built themselves upon by licensing their content in the same fashion, hoping to be the first successful musical group to do so.

"What we have here is the dawning of a modern day renaissance. Much like how the advent of the printing press brought about drastic scientific and social revolutions, we are experiencing a creative explosion brought about using internet technologies and open licensing. This cultural revolution is happening on a global scale." -Vavrek.

The group, which had its origins through the open source music site Opsound.org, says they plan on offering all their music under a license that allows alterations to be made to the music, even for commercial purposes, as long as other artists will use the same license on the new works.

Radio Discordia podcast 011: DJ DangerMouse - The Grey Album

The Grey Album is a mashup album by Danger Mouse, released in 2004. It uses an A'cappella version of rapper Jay-Z's The Black Album and couples it with instrumentals created from a multitude of unauthorized samples from The Beatles' LP The Beatles (more commonly known as The White Album). The Grey Album gained notoriety due to the response by EMI in attempting to halt its distribution.

The album quickly became popular and well-distributed over the Internet because of the surrounding publicity. It also came to the attention of the critical establishment; it received a very positive write-up in the February 9, 2004 issue of The New Yorker and was named the best album of 2004 by Entertainment Weekly.

Grey Tuesday was a day of coordinated electronic civil disobedience on February 24, 2004. Led by Downhill Battle, an activist group seeking to restructure the music industry, participating websites posted copies of Danger Mouse's The Grey Album for free download on its sites for 24 hours in protest of EMI's attempts to prevent any distribution of this unlicensed work. This protest was provoked by the opinion that the sampling is fair use and that a statutory license should be provided in the same manner as if a song had been covered.

Hundreds of Web sites participated and roughly 170 hosted the album for download. Over 100,000 copies were downloaded on that day alone.

The legal repercussions of the protest were minimal; a number of the participants received cease and desist letters from EMI, but no charges were filed in connection with the event.

Radio Discordia Podcast 010: Elvis Of Letters - WS Burroughs & Gus Van Sant

Just four tracks of old-school Burroughs sound-bites (cut up, even!) over guitar/drum/bass folky jazziness by Van Sant the future filmmaker. Unlike most of the work WSB did with Bill Laswell et al., these are less about the content of his writing and more about its effects. They demonstrate cut-ups and repetition and inching and can launch endless psycho-sensory experimentation. The man's voice lends itself remarkably well to musical accompaniment, even when cut-up - it's amazing that any kind of verbal flow can remain after cut-and-paste, much less normal-sounding speech! You've never heard anything like this before, though it seems as familiar as a remembered dream.

Howard Zinn (Aug 24, 1922 – Jan 27, 2010) was an American historian, author, activist, playwright, intellectual and Professor of Political Science at Boston University from 1964 to 1988. He wrote more than 20 books, which included his best-selling and influential A People's History of the United States. Zinn also wrote extensively about the civil rights, civil liberties and anti-war movements. His memoir, "You Can't Be Neutral on a Moving Train," became the title of a 2004 documentary about Zinn's life and work.

The Firesign Theatre is an American comedy troupe consisting of Phil Austin, Peter Bergman, David Ossman and Philip Proctor.The troupe began as live radio performers in Los Angeles on radio stations KPPC-FM and KPFK during the mid-1960s

Like the group's other albums, Everything You Know Is Wrong is made up of a series of surreal skits that make satiric comments on contemporary culture. This album addresses and parodies pseudoscientific beliefs of the mid-1970s. The skits are connected to, or occurring in, "Nude Age Enterprises", the recording studio inside the trailer home of "Happy" Harry Cox in the fictional town of Hellmouth, California. Cox (played by Phil Austin) records seminars and assorted reports, similar to books by such authors as Erich von Daniken, which he calls his "mind-breaking records", to promote the "New Age" and other counterculture beliefs ("Dogs flew spaceships! The Aztecs invented the vacation! Our forefathers took drugs! Your brain is not the boss! Yes! That's right! Everything you know is wrong!").

Hardkiss: Delusions of Grandeur
Original Release Date: April 17, 1995

Scott, Gavin and Robbie, the Hardkiss brothers, ruled the underground San Francisco club scene during the 1990s with a mixture of acid, trance and breakbeat techno. World-class DJs all, the brothers also run their own Hardkiss label, releasing material as themselves plus myriad other artists, including Rabbit in the Moon and Scott's God Within project.

It was Scott and Gavin who formed the group in the early '90s after experiencing Britain's 1989 Summer of Love first hand while studying in Europe. Returning to the States, the two began promoting and organizing massive raves on the East Coast, but later moved out to San Francisco to share the vibe with the West as well. Hooking up with old friend Robbie and christening themselves Hardkiss, the trio began recording material for their eponymous label. Though few releases appeared on anything other than vinyl, the label compilation Delusions of Grandeur serves as a good primer to the Hardkiss sound.

American Edit is a mashup album released by Party Ben and team9 under the shared alias Dean Gray. Its primary basis is the Green Day album American Idiot — the name "Dean Gray" is a spoonerism of "Green Day".

As an internet-only release with no intent of commercial gain, Dean Gray asked fans who enjoyed the album to donate to charities that Green Day have been known to support. Nevertheless, only 10 days after its November 18, 2005 release, the American Edit website was shut down, reportedly after receiving a cease and desist order from Green Day's label, Warner Records, despite the fact that Green Day lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong expressed an interest after hearing "Boulevard of Broken Songs" on the radio.

As a protest against the shutdown, a fan-organized event referred to as "Dean Gray Tuesday" (an intended evocation of 2004's Grey Tuesday) was staged on December 13, 2005. The album was hosted on a number of participating websites as torrents, direct MP3 downloads or ZIP archives. Video clips of "Dr. Who on Holiday", "American Jesus" and "Boulevard of Broken Songs" were also made available. The shutdown and protest contributed to international press coverage beyond the music industry.
